lake reflections
I returned to the lake where I had seen swans bathe in a pink winter sunset to see if I could find more photos like that. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the result. The birds were too far out in the lake for good portraits.
So I took some landscape photos. Looking back they seem more interesting to me than at the time. In this one you see a group of geese on the lake in front of dark tree silhouettes separating the sparkling lake surface from the cloudy sky while both are colored orange by the sun's waning rays.

Another picture in this category sometimes called wildlife landscape. Cormorants and herons have built their nests in these trees and are just hanging out in the winter cold.

I didn't leave completely empty handed regarding portraits though. This coot was near the shore and the lake was calm. So I got it, its reflection and the same for the branch next to it.
Despite now trying to include more of an animal's environment in many of my photos, I still don't have a great appreciation for wildlife landscapes compared to wildlife portraits. Maybe this will change with time. And maybe then I'll be more interested in the lake again.
